Brzostek, Poland

Brzostek is included in the Kolbuszowa Region Research Group (KRRG). Shtetlach were interwoven together like a tapestry and the Jewish people of neighboring shtetlach linked by marriages, trade and marketing. They shared schools, cemeteries, kosher butchers, bakers and more. Smaller shtetlach registered their birth, marriages and death in a nearby larger shtetl. One should research the neighboring area as well as an individual shtetl. The KRRG web site has resources and information that is relevant to many shtetlach. History and Geography:

  • In present day Poland Brzostek is in the Podkarpackie Województwo ( formerly Tarnobrzeski)  [ Province ], Debicki Powiat [ County ]. Brzostek is the seat of the Gmina [ Rural Administrative District ] which includes the city and commune of Brzostek and the following villages / communities:  Bukowa,  Gorzejowa, Grudna Dolna, Grudna Górna,  Januskowice,  Kamienica Dolna,  Kamienicka Górna,  Nawsie Brzosteckie,  Przecczyca,  Siedliska Bogusz, Wola  Brzosteka.

  • The Brzostek Synagogue was built in late 1800.  The building was vandalized and stood empty up to 1960  when it was converted to a school.  http://www.izrael.badacz.org/zydzi_w_polsce/katalog_karpaty_brzostek.html

  • Brzostek Jewish Cemetery was established in the 18th century near the Pilzno-Jasło road.  There is fence built around part of the cemetery. There are no Matzevahs.  Part of the field is now occupied by an agricultural cooperative.
