List of Collections for the years 1925-1936 for the Charity of Rabbi Meir Baal Haness, Kollel Galicia

Translator’s Notes:

Each year the lists were compiled by two (or more) gabbais (warden-volunteers) who received no pay and submitted the signed lists to a head warden (Nasi) who submitted the lists from an entire region to Jerusalem (together with the funds). These funds were distributed to the needy of Jerusalem, Tiberias, Safed and Hebron (and possibly other towns) who originally emigrated from the region from which these funds were collected.

This is a somewhat simplistic view of the R. Meir Baal Hanes charity organizations.

The Talmud relates a story of how a certain Rabbi Meir said that if you say : "G-d of Meir, help me!! you will be helped by the One Above. This is the basis for the charity Pushkas (boxes) that were a part of every families life in Europe. On every occasion, whether for good or bad, R. Meir was asked to interceded on behalf of the donor, or another person whom the donor had in mind. These Pushkas still exist in most Orthodox homes.

There was more than one Kollel (office) in Jerusalem. Each Kollel was in charge of distributing funds to different Landleit, i.e., Chibath Jerusalem Kollel was for Galicia, Shomrei Hachomos is Hungarian, Kollel Polen was for Poland proper, etc. There was even a Kollel America, in the later years.

Comments column:

Blank space denotes a resident of Sokolow. There were several villages in the Sokolow vicinity that came under a particular collectors jurisdiction. The name of the village where a particular donor lived is entered and the word village alone is an indication that the donor did not live in Sokolow proper but rather in a surrounding village, but did not give a name.

There are variants in name spelling, which are indicated in this column.

There are also some vocations, i.e. Rav, shochet, mohel included.

Any other information of genealogical value, i.e., Mother-in-law, or death, is indicated in this column.
