The Jews of Krakow and its Surrounding Towns

Krakow Immigrants on the Ellis Island Database

We wish to launch a  new project on Shtetlinks Krakow. Anyone can participate, and you don't even have to leave the comfort of your desk! All you need is access to the Internet. We wish to document all Krakow arrivals in the Ellis Island database.

A similar project was done by the Shtetlinks/Kupiskis Group (which is much smaller than our Group!) and serves as an excellent example of how such a project can be done. You can download a portion of their Excel database to see the format and type of data that was collected.

To proceed with this project, the following needs to be done:

Lili Haber has kindly agreed to coordinate the data collection and to allocate tasks. Please send her your completed Excel sheets or contact her should you have any questions.
You, the viewer, can begin right now! Simply go to the Ellis Island Search Engine, start your search, and begin extracting data from the original manifest. To avoid duplication, just let everyone on the Krakow Discussion Forum know which alphabetical letter you have chosen. If you want to collect data anonymously then you will have to contact the Data Coordinator.
There are almost 150 members of the Krakow Research Group. We only need 20 or so volunteers. If there are more, then we can split a letter (eg: 'SA' to 'SM' and 'SN' to SZ')
The following letters have already been allocated: L
Those who volunteer for the letter 'Q' will be disqualified!
You will note that the Kupiskis list contains many shtetl spelling variations. Therefore try to include spellings such as Krakow, Cracow, Kroke, Krakau etc.
The time frame for completion of this project is TWO MONTHS
Please note: due to copyright laws, we will be unable to display the results on our WebPages! Therefore ONLY VOLUNTEERS WILL RECEIVE THE COMPLETE EXCEL FILE.

Lets get going!
