The Jews of Krakow and its Surrounding Towns

Krakow Landsmanshaften

Emigrants from Krakow formed numerous organizations in New York; the goals of these organizations were to provide mutual help, financial aid, cultural activities, and sometimes burial plots for landsleit. It is possible that not all societies incorporated, but there were at least 20 official organizations. What follows is information from available incorporation papers (located in the 'Old Records Room' of the NYC Municipal Archives, 31 Chambers Street, NYC), and cemetery information (provided by Estelle Guzik of the NYJGS).

Note too that the YIVO Annual,Volume VIII (1952) has an article by Raphael Mahler titled The Economic Background of Jewish Emigration from Galicia to the United States. On page 265 it states: "Simon Berman of Cracow, author of the memoirs Masoes shimen, relates that when he arrived in NY in 1852 he found over 100 Jews from Cracow. Many of these Jews had arrived not long before him... in 1851-52. Several settled together with him in Cincinnati. Some engaged in peddling, others found work in factories (cigar factories in NY). Some became successful and opened their own stores. Others saved money and returned home to Cracow." [Berman, Simon, Masoes shimen (Cracow, 1879), p. 16-19, 23-24.]
