Town names in English follow the JewishGen ShtetlSeeker “Conventional” form, if available, or the “Native” form in the absence of a Conventional form. The Conventional form is the form “approved by the US Board of Geographical Names (BGN) for use with or instead of the local native name. These names are normally the common English name for a town.” The Native form is the “local official name form approved for use within the US Government by the BGN”. These forms usually differ from the form that appears in the vital records.

Occasionally the BGN forms are so different from the name in the vital records that the two cannot be recognized as the same town. In this case, the form as it appears in the vital records is in parentheses following the BGN form. In some cases, there are many towns with similar names and it is difficult to identify the town to which the vital record refers. We usually have selected the town geographically closest to Kremenets. If significant doubt remains, we have indicated that doubt with a question mark following the BGN name. Note that the Hebrew image sometimes has the Hebrew letter /mem/ as the first letter. This is not part of the name. It is a Hebrew prefix meaning from. The Town Name column also shows geographical coordinates and distance from Kremenets. The list currently contains 83 different town names.
