Letters from Lida - 3, 4Sunday, December 13. (0)
I was planning to write you for a long time, but was waiting
all this time for your letter because in your note to M. Poniachek (
Papa now went to Dorgion (name is not clear) to ask him to write to his son-in-law so he would give you and Olia money, because he is going to send here to his wife, so you could use it. As soon as we receive the letter from you and Olia that you received money from him and how much, we will return at once to his wife(2).
Papa just came back from Dorgion and he (Dorgion) promised that he will write about this to his son-in-law, and because he (Dorgion’s son-in-law) lives somewhere not too far, we will ask him so he would give money to Solomon Steinberg.
About all .. aunt Frida and Liza(3) already wrote, only you probably are interested how we again got closer with Chaya(4), you already know through Velva that Shimshel got ill, I went before RoshaShana to see him and since then we visit each other rather often.
Our newlyweds (or couple?) to this moment were eating with us, but today first time Schaia was cooking separately. They have comfortable and warm apartment. Abraham continues to serve at the railroad station(?) and, thanks God, making money for himself. It is hard to believe, but it is a fact that I already became (“tviger” – probably Yiddish?) and you, my dear children and … daughter-in-law. God give you happiness and long life. Today (I) am not going to write more because Frida rushes me to send a letter, will write next time with more details. Write me how your life and studies are going. Don’t look for a job, maybe you would be able to find something at your school (courses). Be healthy my dear as your loving mother Rebecca wishes.
P.S. Teniashin received 1000 dollars from
(1)Abraham was one of Fanya’s brothers. He married Shayna
Mirsky. They were murdered in the Holocaust, along with their two sons Eliahu and Berele. We remember them here.
(2) In this way, the families avoided sending money overseas
by unreliable mail. Note that there’s mention of letters that never made it.
(3) Fanya had sisters Frida and Liza, and apparently an aunt
Frida as well. Because there were 2 Fridas in the immediate family, Rebecca had
to identify which one she meant. We don’t know of an aunt Frida on the Pupko
side of the family, so possibly this is a maternal aunt.
