Letters from Lida - 52
It was
the custom in Germany, and one which Jews also adopted, for
family members to compose poetry for family occasions. This poem shows
that the Liebermann family also did this - the poem is attributed to
Ruth and Martin Norden. It was composed for a Sukkoth celebration, but
is not dated. Mrs. Plaut is mentioned particularly. The title means,
"Healthy after Sukkoth", but is not quite standard German, and is
used as a refrain. Although its tone is light-hearted, there
are
darker undercurrents - the saying is used because the family wishes to
put unspecified sadness behind them after Sukkoth.
I will gratefully accept a translation from someone with a gift of
rhyme - which I lack entirely.
