Letters from Lida - 59March 29
Dear Dorechka!
Thank God, the first days of the Holidays are over
and today
is the first day of chal-ameed. The sales were a little less than last
year
because first, the weather was bad, snow was falling and rain was
pouring all
day lately, and then there are more co-ops now. And still I feel tired.
I fired
the sales manager because I did not like her work and could not leave
her alone
in the store even for a minute. I need somebody good, experienced, and
honest.
Frida returned last week, e.g. on Sunday, and she had to go back to
work right
away, do the laundry and clean the house. We hired a laundry woman and
also
people from the kibbutz are working for us, and somehow everything was
done in
time. In addition, Frida is working in the store. <A few lines
crossed out>. I asked you and Fanya a few times, did you get finally
finish your
court case and whether the case is closed, but you still did not answer
me.
Before the Seder, I thought a lot about you and may God let you
celebrate next
year under better circumstances. I think a lot if you would agree to come home because, although Papa
comes to help, it is very hard to me to work by myself, and I would retire if I
could collect some money for living from the apartment and the store, so I
would be very happy if you would agree to come home, and then I would not have
to worry about anything and you, with God’s will, would make a good living
here. Think carefully about it, there a lot of plusses here, and the only minus
is that you are afraid of the cold weather, but we also have remedies for that.
Meilach wants to break away <move out>, but God be with him. Lisa, thank God, is not in bed any more and started walking a little. If
I am able to, I am going to visit her tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. Gitele
is a wonderful child, almost like a grown up and even smarter than other kids
her age. I will write Fanya separately. <Crossed out>. Be healthy and
think well about what I wrote you and if you agree we will send money for your
way. Loving you Mama Revekka.
This letter was
written in 1937, both from the fact that Lisa has recently given birth, and
that in 1937 Passover began on March 27.
