Letters from Lida - 151

April 3, 1930

 Dear Mr. Liebermann,

In possession of your letter of March 18, with check  [illegible] the coping saw. The coping saw is unfortunately  too weak for the coarser scions[?]. Its work is very fine, but it remains questionable if it can be used at all. [Hebrew] and [Hebrew] finished, but still owe a lot of money for it (bill enclosed). a pieces on the [illegible] at the [illegible] planted and grafted trees, too.  [Something] couldn’t be plowed, and had to be done by hand. To hoe only around the trees would make no sense this  year, as there’s hardly space, yes only 3 m. the second [illegible] half [illegible].

For maize [corn in the US] one should wait for the first irrigation (until the second plowing). It’s doubtful whether the present sowing will even sprout. In [Hebrew] the ground is usually plowed twice for corn. [This is what you had to do before there were weed killers, to get rid of as many weeds as possible before you planted]. You will get the pictures with the next post. 2 exposures have been taken. I’m dropping them off for development and will have a new series made.

Dienowitz requests permission to add a few water pipes to the end of yours, to water 4-5 Dunam [Israeli unit of land measure]. He would obligate himself to water ours, when we’re not. We’d have the advantage of having a spigot at the boundary, which would let us water [Hebrew] more easily where it’s now difficult.

Bielsky plowed ten days and spread fertilizer one day.
