It is not feasible for the Lyakhovichi shtetl website to undertake a full analysis of the records available from Eretz Israel. What we do hope to accomplish, is an understanding of the materials that may be available related to Lyakhovichi people in those records. Then we need your help. As you find your people from Lyakhovichi in these materials, please share the details and the images.

One of 650,000 Application Cards for Israeli Immigration created 1920-1964, filed by individual Israeli residents for family abroad

Immigration Records of Eretz Israel

There are several sets of records held by the Central Zionist Archives that are relevant to Israeli immigration. We have not searched for Lyakhovichi people in any of them Can you help?

Immigrant Registers 1919-1968 186 registers

"Statistical Cards" 1919-1948 Despite their name, they continue to hold individual names and data. There are 30,000 cards according to the CZA. The cards from 1919-1932 are in a computer database, but the others are not yet processed for that kind of search.

Immigration Application files 1920-1964 A period in the 1950s is missing and best supplemented with recrods in the Israel State Archives for that same period. There are 650,000 Immigration Application cards in this set of data. These applications were made by people in Israel for their relatives abroad, so many are for people who did not make it out of Europe before the Holocaust. Communities like Lyakhovichi which had a strong and early active Zionist movement, are likely to be better represented in this material. In 2002, a database of those whose surnames started with Aleph-Dalet had been entered into a computer.

Primary Records of Other Nations Created about those from Lyakhovichi - Israel

A primary record is a document created in the normal course of daily events or for a particular event, not a compilation from published sources, and not a document whose audience was considered wider than the officials to whom it was presented. There are many primary documents that you will be able to access on individuals in your family, that do not list a place of birth or last residence in Lyakhovichi. We would like the information you can derive from them, or images of the documents themselves, for people who are otherwise confirmed as connected to our town. But some records required the reporting of a birthplace, some documented the past or current places of residence and included Lyakhovichi. It is these records, we will report on this page. I have a copy of an Israeli death certificate from the 1970s, shared by the generosity of Marilynn Handelman, of Zelig Robinson, but I can't find a mention in its multiple pages of Zelig's birth in Lyakhovichi. If another year does include that data, I would like to so inform our research community, and post images here!

Records of Eretz Israel
by Deborah G. Glassman, copyright 2007

Lechowitzers Buried on the Mount of Olives, Har haZetim, in Jerusalem

The list of our landsmen buried in the Holy Land is barely started. The official count for those whose connection to Lyakhovichi was documented in the burial record is only 11 names but we know of a number that have not been included. Help us build this list!
Lyakhovichi 11
Kletsk 7
Byten 5
Kobrin 5
Novogrudok 19
Nesvizh23
Slutsk 52
That table shows the numbers from each of several towns near us known to have been buried on Har haZetim.

The Israel Genealogical Society has done an immense service by indexing these records and further details on the plot location are available on a cd sold by that organization, so I will just list the names and death dates and encourage you to search their database and make a contribution to their organization, if you intend to visit the grave or to have a photograph made of the stone. In addition to the eleven from Lyakhovichi, I have included those attributed to the two larger nearby communities of Slutsk and Slonim, as this is not actually a list of birthplaces but of where the person was "from." Many people who had lived for a short time in a larger community were described as "of that community" in addition to those who would have sojourned in the larger towns nearby for business opportunities, or to live with married children, or for educational opportunities. You will have more success than I did in finding your Lyakhovichi family that you know are buried here. For many were interred with no indication of cities in which they lived. In that case, as you find them, please let the webmaster know! We will add them to this list with notations crediting you and noting the source of your information.

When you refer to the Society's cd you will see that they have placed these towns in their modern nations and someone has made the decision that for all listings from Lyakhovichi, they will specify the modern country of Ukraina, which is certainly accurate for some of the Lyakhovichis. But I am not aware of anything that actually states a Russian province in the record by which today's nations could be deduced, and as the surrounding towns of Slonim, Nesvizh, Kopul, et al, are represented, I think it likely that at least some are from our Lyakhovichi. - DGG (the webmaster)

There are many other record types that we will include in this section, as we go forward. If you are aware of any Israeli record created under any government, that would name a Lyakhovichi birthplace or residence, let us know. If you have copies of specific records that name your Lyakhovichi-born relative, and privacy issues are not a factor, please share them for posting on these pages.
