The Altschul Synagogue of Nikolsburg

Although in the early 19th century Nikolsburg had many synagogues, today only the oldest and most important of them remains, the Altschul Synagogue. Originally built in 1550, it was entirely rebuilt following the devastating fire of 1723. In 1890, in accordance with the then current trend, the original plan of the synagogue was changed and the pulpit placed in front of the thorah screen, so that the almemor with its four columns lost its function. The entire interior was destroyed by the nazis, but the decoration was partially restored in the 1970s.
