The Skala Yizkor Book

Return to Skala Shtetlinks page

The Skala yizkor book, Sefer Skala, was published in New York and Tel Aviv in 1978 by the Skala Benevolent Society. It contains articles written by Skala natives, some of whom emigrated prior to the war and others of whom survived the Holocaust.

Although most of the yizkor book was written in Hebrew and Yiddish, it does contain several sections in English. These include: “The History of Skala;” “The Destruction of Skala;” a document written by survivors in 1944, under the direction of the Soviet military authorities; a chart entitled “Crimes Perpetrated by the German-Fascist Occupiers and their Collaborators in Skala Podolska, State of Tarnopol;” and “List of Martyrs: Skala Residents Who Perished During the Holocaust Years (1941-1945).”

The entire yizkor book has been scanned in its original form and may be viewed on the web site of the New York Public Library.

You can go to the pages 98 to 55 (Images 324 to 281) of that book for a list in English of those that died in the Holocaust and there is also a list in Yiddish and English of those that survived on pages 143 to 146 (Images 161 to 164).

Copies of the yizkor book are available. For information, contact Skala Shtetl Leader Tony Hausner .
