History and Geography:
  • In present day Ukraine, Losyach is in the Ternopilska Oblast (Region / Province) and in Borshchivskyi Raion (County/ District).
  • Losyacz was a shtetl, approximately 7 miles from Skala Podolskaya, and 8.2 miles from Borszczów. It was populated mostly by Ukrainians with a dozen or more Jewish families, who were all affiliated with the Jewish Community of Skala and were usually buried in the Skala cemetery. Many of those who perished are listed in the Skala Yizkor book (edited by Max Merest). In the "Black Book of localities whose Jewish Population was exterminated by the Nazis" (Avotaynu 1989, microfiche) the following appears: LOSIACZ-GM.POL TARN 104 LOSIACZ-OB. DW. POL TARN 3. The numbers refer to the Jewish population based on the Polish census of 1921. GM. means "gmina" which is a rural community (a village), and OB. DW. means "obzar dworski" which is an estate ("dwor" is a manor house). Thus there were 104 Jews in Losyach and 3 Jews in the nearby estate in 1921. [Many Thanks to Shuki Ecker of Ramat Gan, Israel, for providing the explanation of the census record.] Submitted by Mike Steinberg.
