Holocaust Victims from Uzpaliai |

Yakov Kopelansky, a retired welder and supervisor
in a tank factory, who was born and raised in Uzpaliai, survived the
Holocaust, then life in Lithuania under Soviet rule, and now lives in
Israel. He is working on writing his memories of life in Uzpaliai both
before and during World War II. Yakov estimates that in 1939 there were approximately 100 Jewish families, with about 800 members, living in Uzpaliai. He thinks that from 10 to 15 people were still alive at the end of World War II. He created the following list of almost 300 victims of the Holocaust from memory and asked that we not forget them. He ended with the following words "That is the list of names that I remember. I'm sorry a hundred times for those whose names I have forgotten. I am sorry."

Bev Berkal, wife of Uzpaliai descendant Arky
Berkal, worked on updating this list. She used Yakov's list and added
names from Yad Vashem pages of testimony as well as Berkal family
names.
She used Revison Lists and Yad Vashem
Pages of Testimony to add information such as the surnames of women
and the names of children.. And Berkal family members searched
their memories and provided names and genealogical data for
family members and people they had known in Ushpol.
