Economic Review

Traditional activities of local Jewish population were trade with timber, grain, vodkaand fish. Since early time Berezina river was the main road and trade way for localhabitants.

The shtetle began to develop at the end of XVI - early XVII century. But the events ofthe XVII-XVIII centuries undermined Chirkovichi economy and the Shtetle fell in decay.

During Russian principality vodka trade was under state hard control and became lesspopular among Jewish businessmen. But the authorities did a lot to develop the regionbecause of military and fiscal reasons mostly. First of all, old communications werereconstructed there:
bulletroad Bobruisk - Parichi - Chirkovichi - Rechitsa;
bulletZdudichi - Chirkovichi - Dubrova - Ozarichi;
bulletold small harbour.

In XIX, because of development of the All-Russian Market, new types of communicationsappeared in the area:
bulletLibava - Romny railroad (closest to Chirkovichi station was in Krasny Bereg, 52 km afar);
bulletBobruisk - Rechitsa highway (transformation of old road);
bulletmodern big harbour in Gorval (Rechitsa District of Minsk Province).

New communications provoked new increase of the development of Chirkovichi and by theearly XX century it became a local business and trade centre.

Unfortunately, we do not know any big business or trade enterprises in Chirkovichibefore 1917.

In 1909 in Chirkovichi there were 165 wooden houses.

General cultural information

In the late XIX - early XX century in Chirkovichi there was the Orthodox church of St.Peter and Paul.

Closest post office, synagogue and doctor were in Parichi(22 km).
