Shtetlinks & Frontpage

FrontPage 1998 or 2000, a very popular web editing program, has a number of advantages over other web editing programs. Special features make creating web pages and managing your web site much easier and less time-consuming.  It also offers the option of publishing your site directly to the Internet, rather than going through a third party FTP.

Special features like FrontPage web and page templates and themes are real timesavers and a help to users unfamiliar with HTML. FrontPage Shared Borders is an option that allows you to place the same information on every web page by entering it just once. You may also edit Shared Borders just once to change the shared information on every page. FrontPage allows you to disable Shared Borders or Themes on specific pages, if desired.

These are just a few of the advantages of FrontPage. There are many more.  A number of good instructional books on FrontPage are on the market which go into detail on FrontPage features and give step-by-step instructions on creating web pages. The pointers below are specific to creating ShtetLinks sites with FrontPage, using the present Internet Service Provider.

Creating a new ShtetLinks Web Site with FrontPage 98 \ 2000

  1. Create a new web using a FP Web Template. FP Web Template “Personal Web” works well in creating a ShtetLinks site.
  1. In the Navigation View, work out the navigation structure of the site.
  1. Create “Shared Borders” and “Navigation Bars” in all the pages, if desired.
  1. Choose a FP “Theme” to apply to the web site, if desired. Modify as needed.
  1. Then, begin creating the body of the pages; use FP “Page Templates” as needed.
  2. NOTE: Be sure to create duplicates of all files for your own records; if your computer shuts down while working in FP editor, you may lose the contents of Shared Borders, or other elements and text.

Home Page

  1. Home page file must be named <index.html> or <index.htm>; new ShtetLinks sites pages should start out with this file name for the home page.
  2. For already existing ShtetLinks sites wishing to retain their old URL, one should create a redirect page with the old home page URL pointing to the new home page URL.

Guestbook

  1. Use the Guestbook Template (modify as required).
  2. Optional Confirmation page may be used.
  3. You may store the Guestbook comments on the same page as the form or on a separate page. Edit in “Form Properties.” It is preferable to save only the “Date” and “Comments” fields (saving too many fields will make the resulting Guestbook too lengthy after readers leave their comments).
  4. Guest book signers have to clear their browser before being able to read their comments in the guest book (make a note of this on the Guestbook page; it is already noted in the FP Guestbook page template).
  5. If it becomes necessary to edit the text in the Guestbook Results Page for any reason:
      1. Open FrontPage
      2. Open Internet Explorer. Click “File” à “Edit with Microsoft FrontPage”
      3. Go back to your already open FrontPage Program (or your window will automatically go back to FP). Type your user name and password in the prompt. The Guestbook Results Page will open and allow you to edit the text.
      4. When finished editing, click “File” à “Close”.
      5. To verify that the text has been edited, clear your browser and access the page.

FrontPage Components and Features that you can use on the Shtetlinks Site

  1. Banner Ad Manager (maximum of 9 images allowed per banner)
  2. Hover buttons
  3. Hit Counter  (cannot be reset to “0” or any other number once it is inserted and uploaded)
  4. Table of Contents
  5. Navigation Bars and Graphics in Themes
  6.

FrontPage Components that you should not use

1.      Search - This feature is not available

2.      DHTML effects, these will work fine for Internet Explorer users, for Netscape users many of these effects will not work.

3.      Marquee - This will work fine for Internet Explorer users, for Netscape users it will not work.

The key thing to bear in mind when constructing your site is the Audience; they will not necessarily have powerful PC's and high-speed Internet access. Your site needs to be accessible to all not a limited group. Test your pages with both IE and Netscape to ensure compatibility.
