General Information

Located in eastern Romania, Galati/Galatz, the capital of Galati judetal and a port at the confluence of the Danube, Siret, and Prut rivers, sits just above marshlands formed by the Siret

and Prut Rivers, part of the Danube estuary. These rivers formed an important commercial route in past history, holding the most famous trade fair on the Danube in Galati town, an

important market for commerce from about 1837 to 1883.

Bordering geographical features include:

·         Vaslui County to the north

·         the Prut River (forming the natural border with the Republic of Moldavia) in the east

·         the Danube River east for 22 km., separating it from Tulcea County;

·         Braila County to the southwest along the Siret River

·         Vrancea County to the northwest.

            The total land surface of Galati County is 4,466 sq. km or 1.9% of Romanian territory. Agricultural surface represents 80.3% of the county territory. Vineyards represent the majority of

            land under cultivation (with 83.1% in private control) followed by orchards and nurseries (with 33.8% in private control), hay, and meadows.

Galati County contains of four urban centers: Galati and Tecuci municipalities, Tirgu Bujor and Beresti towns, and fifty-six communes comprising 180 villages. 1998 Galati Population:

332,000 or 641,561 in the entire county. The 1997 unemployment rate ran about 10%. Presently, Galati is the only Danube River harbor in Moldavia and Romania’s metallurgic center.

Galati County, rich in natural resources, has agricultural fields (80.1% of the surface) and forests (10.1% of the surface). 22 km. of the Danube, 150 km. of the Siret, and 103 km. of the

Prut Rivers form its hydrographic network. Natural resources include crude oil as well as natural and associated gas. Today, industry includes sawmills, flour mills, rope factories,

petroleum refineries, steel mills, and a shipyard. Textiles and metal products enter the port while cereals, cattle, and timber are exported. Educational facilities include the University of

Galati (founded in 1948) and the Pedagogic Institute (founded in 1959). Galati is home to Romania's largest steel mill. Shipyards line the riverfront. Galati was bombed heavily during

W.W.II. Massive housing complexes fill the center and hillsides of the industrial city. Galati has two ports and passenger ferries to Tulcea.
