Jeżów is a village in central Poland. It lies approximately 53 km (33 mi) south of the regional capital Łódź and 84 km (52 miles) from Warsaw. Jeżów can be found on National Road #72 between 72 Łódź and Warszaw. The coordinates are 51º48N 19º58E. Alternate names for Jeżów are Yezhov [Yiddish} and Yezhuv [Russian.] Maps and historical information about the town can be found at Jewishgen.
Researchers should note that there are two other towns in Poland by the name of Jeżów:
Jews first arrived in Jeżów in 1793. The Jewish community of Jeżów developed in the 19th century and by 1897, it numbered 733, 38% of the total population.
By 1921, the Jewish population numbered 1,048. Anti-Semitic outbreaks were frequent between the World Wars, especially in 1935. According to one source, on February 1, 1941, the 1,570 Jews of Jeżów, including more than 600 refugees were expelled to the Warsaw Ghetto.
Jeżów’s 2006 population was approximately 3,600. There are presently no Jews.
Jeżów is in Powiat Brzeziny. A powiat is similar to a county, is a unit of territorial administration and local government. Powiat Brzeziny is in Łódź Voivodeship. The powiat’s administrative seat and only town is Brzeziny, which lies 20 kilometres (12 mi) east of the regional capital Łódź.
The county covers an area of 358.51 square kilometres (138.4 sq mi). As of 2006 its total population is 30,600, out of which the population of Brzeziny is 12,373 and the rural population is 18,227.
The county is subdivided into five gminas (one urban—Brzeziny; and four rural—Gminas Brzezny, Dmosin, Rogów ). These are listed in the following table, in descending order of population.
Gmina Jeżów contains the villages and settlements of Brynica, Dąbrowa, Frydrychów, Góra, Jankowice, Jankowice-Kolonia, Jasienin Duży, Jasienin Mały, Jeżów, Kosiska, Leszczyny, Lubiska, Lubiska-Kolonia, Marianówek, Mikulin, Mikulin-Parcela, Mościska, Olszewo, Popień, Popień-Parcela, Przybyszyce, Rewica, Rewica Królewska, Rewica Szlachecka, Rewica-Kolonia, Stare Leszczyny, Strzelna, Taurów, Władysławowo, Wola Łokotowa and Zamłynie.
