Letters from Lida 

• We have had the great good fortune to be able to obtain a large collection of family letters written from Lida to family in Palestine, from the 1920s to the Holocaust. Translation is an ongoing process.

• Pupko Beer was brewed in Lida for several generations, until the Holocaust.  Sioma Pupko, the author of a section of Sepher Lida, "The Story of Sioma and Mrs. Pupko", was a member of this family.  This page has labels from the Lida Papirmeister Brewery, as well as Pupko  Beer.

Lida Today

• Alan Sher Zaiger of the Naples Daily News, traveled to Lida in late 2002. The report he wrote was online for a while, but can no longer be located on the newspaper's site [2006].

• Photographs of the Lida area by Igor Peshekhonov. Click on the tombstone at the lower right for pictures of  the Jewish Cemetery in Belitsa & the Holocaust Memorial in Lida.

• A long-forgotten mass grave was studied outside Lida, and a monument dedicated in August 2003.
  
• In March 2004, the reconstituted Jewish Community of Lida celebrated its 10th anniversary.  The activities included a visit to the ancient Belitsa Jewish Cemetery.

• Amarant, Schmuel The Tuvia Bielski Partisan Company, in Nivo shel adam (Expressions of a man) (Jerusalem: Published privately with the help of Misrad Hahinuch ve Hatarbut, 1973). This chapter was translated from Hebrew into English by R. Goodman.
• Cohen, Helen Degen in Concert at Chopin's House edited by John Minczeski St. Paul MN: New Rivers Press, 1987.  An autobiographical short story & 5 poems with autobiographical themes are in this anthology.  Cohen is a survivor from Lida.
• Damesek, Eliyahu Otiyot be-'ofret Tel Aviv: ha-Kibuts ha-me'uhad, 1983. This book is a personal narrative of a Holocaust survivor from Lida. It's in Hebrew.
• Duffy, Peter  The Bielski Brothers: The True Story of Three Men Who Defied the Nazis, Aved 1,200 Jews, and Built a Village in the Forest  NY: HarperCollins 2003.  This is one of the few books about the Lida area that's readily available in regular bookstores.   Based on a lot of research, it's a must-read for the Holocaust era.
  
• Gabel, Dina Behind the Ice Curtain abridged edition published by NY: CIS 1992.  The autobiography of a woman from Lida whose family was exiled to Siberia in 1939, when the Soviets occupied Lida right after the Hitler-Stalin Pact was broken.
• Kuszelewicz,  Joseph Un Juif de Bielorussie de Lida a Karaganda Paris: L'Harmattan 2000.  This book, the autobiography of a survivor who settled in France,  is available from amazon.fr & is a terrific way to brush up on that high school French.
  
• Manski, Samuil With God's Help Madison, WI: C. F. Manski, 1990. A 103-page biography of a man from Lida [born 1920] who emigrated & lived in Amherst, MA. OCLC lists copies at the Library of Congress & the US Holocaust Memorial Museum.
• Reines, Isaac Jacob Bericht von Lider Jeschiwah Wilna: Zawadzski'sche Buchdruckerei 1910? OCLC lists only one copy, at Harvard University. This report on the Lida Yeshiva is in German!
• Rubinowitz-Schif, Sarah Na'arah ba-milhamah Tel Aviv: Muze'on ha-lohanim veha-partizanim, 1990. This is another personal narrative from a Lida Holocaust survivor and in Hebrew.
• Spector, Shumuel & Freundlich, Bracha Lost Jewish Worlds: the communities of Grodno, Lida, Olkieniki, Vishay Jerusalem: Yad Vashem 1996.
• Tec, Nechama Defiance: the Bielski Partisans Oxford UK: Oxford U. Press, 1993. This book is about the Bielski brothers and the partisan group they led in the forests around Lida.
