When I started creating the Lyakhovichi website in 2004, Gary Palgon and Neville Lamdan, had already spent a decade documenting the history of the Jewish community in Lyakhovichi. They had collected the data from each of the cemeteries where the Bnai Isaac Anshe Lechowitz (a New York City organization established by Jews from Lechowitz in Minsk guberniya Russia) was known to have had cemetery plots. We have since added the plots held by additional Lechovicher religious groups and social groups, but Washington Cemetery's Bnai Isaac Anshe Lechowitz data remains the great resource that was originally discovered and we have found ways to make it more valuable.

We have learned the value of the burial registers cannot be replaced by other documents, even those graven in stone. Sixty children were reported in the burial register for Washington Cemetery and only six children gravestones remain! As you actively search for your family's records in cemeteries around the nation, please wherever you can get permission of the register-owners, take digital photographs or photoduplicates of the pages of the burial registers themselves, at least of the pages for the organization in whose plots they were buried.

We have discovered that the rows in the Lechowitz plot were originally divided into classifications comparable to those in Old Lechowitz - married man, married woman, bachelors, maidens, and children. We can also document the period of time in which those designations became more flexible - when young men of an age to be married had fallen to the onslaught of World War I or the Influenza Epidemic of 1918 and were buried in the "married men's" row. When Bnai Isaac may have been on the way to becoming a Conservative Shul with husbands and wives buried together. When vacancies unlikely to be filled by original members of the congregation were seen as mitzvah opportunities and became the places where recent arrivals to the US in the 1980s from the Soviet Union could bury their families as well.
