Matsevot, Cemetery Inscriptions for those "from" Lyakhovichi Bnai Isaac Anshe Lechowitz at Beth David Cemetery
Photography by Tina Levine Table and Database creation by Deborah Glassman, copyright 2008.
by Deborah G. Glassman, copyright 2008
This is a page in our Documents section. Click the button labeled "Documents" in the left-hand column to reach all of the other resources of the Document area. It is also a part of the Current Projects listed in the Welcome section, so you may also click that button to read about other current collaborative projects on which we are working. A full list of each page in our Cemetery Stones project is on the Projects page.
The Cemetery Stone Project now encompasses around two dozen pages. Please go to Cemetery Stones, page 1 to find out what is included in these pages, to find the links to all of the pages we have created documenting Lechovicher burials, and to learn about the key role of Tina Levine in creating this tremendous collection of data for Lyakhovichi researchers. She photographed every stone in every NYC plot related to Lyakhovichi and Baranovichi, over 1200 photographs including the ones on this page.
Cemetery Stones, page 1 also describes some of our new discoveries that allow us to determine key facts about the deceased even when their stone is damaged, eroded, or missing. Please check the introductary article on that page to learn what the symbols and shapes of the monuments may tell you as well as details we can learn from the Hebrew names on the markers. The database of stones that the webmaster created, based on the images created by Tina Levine, is what you are using as you examine the listings created for Washington Cemetery in New York City, below.
There is an alphabetical burial register for this cemetery at
Burial Register of Bnai Isaac Anshe Lechowitz at Beth David Cemetery . That list includes the data as is offered in the cemetery company records including the burial date and variations in surname or given name.
The graves below are organized temporarily in alphabetical order, as the rows as given do not inform as to the order in which buried or who is buried next to whom. Double stones and family members that are in a single plot will be listed together where that can be determined. In the next update we hope to have the jigsaw puzzle solved and be able to tell you who is on what row and whose stone is missing, etc. To aid that process we will also tell you which grave appears next if it can be determined by the photo. The alphabetical list below is derived from that of the burial registers. Our register compilation was done around 8 years ago and does not include burials since that date. We have added those that we have identified in the photos. They may appear out of order at the bottom of the table. The burial register also includes plots for which no cemetery stone currently exists and we have listed all of those that we can determine.
All of the graves in the Bnai Isaac Anshe Lechowitz plot at Beth David Cemetery appear on:
Cemetery Stones, p8: Beth David Cemetery -Bnai Isaac Anshe Lechowitz (A-LEVY) You are Here!
Cemetery Stones, p9: Beth David Cemetery -Bnai Isaac Anshe Lechowitz (LEW- ZIRIN)
Cemetery Stones, p10: Beth David Cemetery - Bnai Isaac Anshe Lechowitz Burial Register and Gates
The alphabetical burial register, the cemetery gates, and the Holocaust Memorial
A Complete List of all pages in the Cemetery Stone Project appears at Cemetery Stones, p1
This database's pages are divided by by organization, by cemetery, and by the row divisions of that particular set of plots.
This page has only listings for Bnai Isaac Anshe Lechowitz at Beth David Cemetery whose photos are currently arranged alphabetically and begins at the Surname Angel and continues to Levy.
Facts to Keep in Mind for all of the Lechovicher burials
If your ancestor is buried in a Lechovicher plot: Does that mean they were definitely from Lyakhovichi? No, it could mean that they were married to a Lechovicher or that a child-in-law was a Lechovicher. Some of the graves used in more recent years could have been donated to someone who had a pressing need, or sold when the original lot holder was buried elsewhere.
If your ancestor is not buried in a Lechovicher plot: Does that mean they were not from Lyakhovichi? No, there are many reasons someone would not be buried in a plot owned by one of the known landsmanschaften. They could have had plots from a spouse's society. They could have enjoyed the company of one group more than another. They could have associated with a non-origin specific group that offered burial plots, they could have lived and died in a city where no such organization existed, they could have died while resident elsewhere. Even when buried amidst a group of landsmen such affiliation might not be immediately obvious if the group to which they belonged identified itself as Minsker, Russian, or some larger group to which Lechovichers also belonged. Tina Levine, our indefatigable volunteer, has found the burials for the NYC siblings of her Lechovicher great-grandfather, buried in the plots of a Nesvizher society, a Stavisker society, a labor union, as well as in the Lechovicher plot at Mt Judah cemetery. The Workman's Circle offered plots to the Lechovicher branch in Paramus NJ, and two Lyakhovichi Hasidic congregations had plots that might have attracted a branch of your family.
