Hamburg Emigration Documents 1890-1910
citing Lyakhovichi or Baranovichi Residence

by Deborah Glassman, 2005

The lists cited in this 2005 article have now been incorporated into our Lyakhovichi Migration Tables but the intro may still be useful for describing how the records were selected and handled.

The lists from the port of Hamburg, have a great deal of room to expand and improve. They have not yet been edited to remove people from the "wrong Lyakhovichi." So emigrants from Lechowitz Volin, and Lechowitz near Vilna, and "Lechowitz Poltawa," are here all listed together. We hope to change that in a future update, our major accomplishment was to get a list of over 500 immigrants who declared Lechowitz as their last residence, when leaving Europe, in a single listing. The lists can also be expanded to include the people whose last residence was one of the tiny towns around Lyakhovichi who would have come into our town for religious occassions, to pay their taxes, and to attend market days or send their children to schools. There is a linked page to this one, which we also have incorporated, for those who declared Baranovichi as their last residence when leaving Europe via Hamburg. See Baranovichi Hamburg List

The left hand column of this page includes those who sojourned in the Poor Jews Temporary Shelter in London. We also had here prior to November 2008, a chronological index of the Hamburg -exiting Jews from Lyakhovichi which we will use as framework to add those finds made as we make our way through the Hamburg handwritten indices.
