Given Names Reported in Lyakhovichi Records: Given Names F, G and H by Deborah Glassman, copyright 2008.
All indices on this page are ©Deborah Glassman 2008 and may not be reproduced in whole or part or included in another database, without her written permission.
Repeated Introduction Across All Pages of the Given Name Index
This index includes all of the original records on the Lyakhovichi website as of May 2008. It does not include other finding tools like the patronymic index, the immigration index, or the internal indices of the different census enumerations and revision lists. It also does not yet include the new collaborative databases added in May 2008. It does include all picture captions as well as extracted data from those records.
The Given Name Index is not a reworking of the Patronym tables nor of the Surname Index. It gives us access to many more people over a greater period of time, beginning with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania Census of 1784 and continuing into documents created by the governments of the twentieth century nations of the United States, Soviet Union, and Israel.
Tens of thousands of individual recordings of people born in, or resident of, Lyakhovichi are reported in the Given Name Index. The webmaster has utilized some standard practices to make tracking people from one record to its predecessor, an easier process.
Names have been gathered together in groups by a standardized spelling, though the individual records have not been changed. So Abram, Abraham, Avrom, Avrum,. Avram, Awrum, Avraham, and every other possible variant, have been brought together. They then were alphabetized by surname when one existed and then ordered by date within those surnames.
We have introduced co-names (such as Judah and Leib), linked names (like Yehiel and Michael), and translated names (such as
Zvi, Hirsch, and Girsh), on other pages of our website (See the Surname Index). In this index we have only brought together the translations, not the co-names or the links. So you will see Asher and Osher all indexed together as spelling variants, but Zelig, a linked name to Asher, is indexed separately. The Hirsch of Yiddish, the Hyrsz of Polish, and the Girsh of Russian, are all indexed together, but Naftali, a co-name to all of them is posted separately. Let the webmaster know if you think this is a good solution or whether you would find it helpful to have the names in both places or think they should be brought together or you have another solution that has not yet been considered.
Page F,G,H
It worked out well that G and H was indexed on this same page. The Russian language substitutes a G for the letter H in many words so Girsh becomes the common Russian form for Hirsch, for example. The girl's names Hadassa, Hinda, and Henya, are written in Lyakhovichi records most often as Gadas, Ginda, and Genya. Some names that should properly start with a Ch or Kh, like Chana, are softened in common usage to Hanna and we have at least once instance of that appearing as Gana. The man's name Gelya appears to be a form of Elya (based on other records a person with that name appears in) but for full coverage, it is offered on this page since it appears only once. The name Govsey is a nickname for the name Yehoshua, which in English is Joshua. There are four main nicknames for Joshua in the Lyakhovichi region - Govsey and Ovsey, or Geshel and Gessel.
The names Govsey and Ovsey are interchangeable, appearing one way in one Revision List and the other in the next. People who are called Gessel/Geshel or Hessel/Heshel switch between the s sounds in their names and the G and the H, but there is no demonstrable intermingling of the two sets of nicknames. I haven't found a single evidence of a Gessel sometimes being called Govsey or Ovsey. Because Govsey and Ovsey are alternate forms for each other, they are both ndexed together here.
American Names There are few translations from Yiddish and Russian into English, but there are many names that are commonly exchanged for a name in the other language. A paucity of English names that started with the F sound, created a situation of many "Feivel"s becoming "Philip" in English. But we have not combined the name Philip and Feivel in the Given Names Index. "Frank" was usually chosen for men who were called Froim in Yiddish, but you will not find Froim on the F page - look for ancestors with that name under E, it is a variant of Efraim. Girls English names are terrible predictors of original Yiddish names - Fannie was just as likely to be a Fruma, a Feiga, or a Fania. All, however, are indexed here, if you don't spot your person in one part of the table, move down the page. A name rich in possibilities,. is the amazingly prosaic American "Harry." He might be: Hirsch/Gersh; Gershon; Khaim; Hillel/Gilel; Khatzkel; Kusiel; and more. He is indexed here very straight-forwardly as Harry. Most American names are indexed as they stand, the exception being Hyman which is indexed with Khaim. American names, Polish names, and Russian names, that do not appear in large numbers are indexed together near the end of the page. Polish names carried by immigrants or in a business directory, may or may not be Jews, Jews used these names more commonly after the Polish state was reestablished as a separate nation in the 1920s.
Notes on the Tables
The webmaster is working her way through the lists combing them for multiple iterations in the same record. This is a work in progress but you will now see the term "multiple" in many of the lists below. It means that the name appears in that record multiple times with that same spelling. A different spelling is indexed separately. Our Holocaust Records include three lists drawn from Yad Vashem and "multiple" is only noted if a name appears repeatedly in the same list with the same spelling. The Imperial Russian Lists that include Lyakhovichi extracted voters of Slutsk uyezd, will have the word "multiple" reported, if the person appears on that page more than once and many people appear in voters lists of different years. The 1883-1884 Tax Lists combine three lists: taxpayers; electors who choose representative deputies; and the deputies. "Multiple" means that the same name appears more than once in the list, possibly as a taxpayer and a deputy or some other combination. The Tax List will show in the Given Name Index, as multiples regardless of patronyms, if the first-name/ surname combination is repeated in the list. Immigration records may show as multiple if the person appears repeatedly in the records of another - i.e. three children going to the same father. It is a good reminder that when you use these indices to arrive at a target page, and have found your person of interest, you should then use the "find" command on your internet browser, to look for that same name variation, to repeat the search on that same page.
