Situated on the Slanic River, a tributary of the Varbilau, Slanic lies
in the forested hills of the Sub-Carpathians, 45 km north of Ploiesti.
This all-season resort, with pleasant summers and relatively mild winters,
boasts of curative powers from its mineral waters used since 1885. Lakes
Baia Baciului, Baia Rosie, Baia Porcilor, and Lacul Verde supposedly cure
degenerative rheumatic diseases, post-traumatic conditions and a variety
of other ills. Facilities for warm mineral water baths, cold lake baths,
and warm mud baths are available. The old Unirea salt mine serves currently
as an in-patient sanatorium for the treatment of respiratory diseases.
Slanic guest accommodations include villas, pavilions, and private homes.
Also of interest are a natural "salt mountain" reserve and the charming
Lacul Miresii (Bride's Grotto), a 425 square meter by 20-meter deep lake,
formed in 1914 when a salt mine collapsed.
