Some Czernowitz Holdings at the Yad Vashem Archives

Yad Vashem Archival Holdings

Microfilm numbers: JM 11290 - (till microfilm number) JM 11349. The data come from the archives of city of Czernowitz. To the best of my knowledge, the data can be classified as

1. Administrative correspondence between Czernowitz officials and Bucharest.
2. Community data ( how much gold and money was confiscated from the Jewish community).
3. Private citizen information (statements about the number of family members and their addresses, lists of old and sick Jews that requested exemptions from forced labor and so on).
4. There are also those the following documents of interest in the library: M.52 (101), (102), (103), M37/1653, M371577, M33/194, M37/20-29, O.32/71 (see below)
5. There are also many private testimonies.

Additional details of selected microfilms and documents:

• JM11290 concerns information on families from July 1942 written in Romanian, after the third and final massive deportation, when there were only 15,000 - 20,000 Jews left in the city.
• JM 11292 was composed by a Russian committee assessing damage to people and property in 1945/6. This file is written in Russian, and lists thousands of names - based on survivor testimony. These same documents exist on paper, number O 11/140.
• I also found lists of Jewish professionals dating from July 1, 1941. These are Doc. # M.52 (101), M.52 (102), and M.52 (103). All documents from the war period were written in Rumanian. Most documents from the Czernowitz archive are also in Romanian.
• JM 11347 a list of sick and elderly people (above 70 years old) who were asking for an exemption from forced labor. In addition to names, this list contains birth dates and addresses. The list dates from summer 1941 ( before the ghetto).        

  Example: The following REISCH family given names were found on microfilms JM 11307 and 11308, written in Romanian, from July 1942. These names included 1942 addresses in the Czernowitz Ghetto.
