Dear Mr. Rosin,
I have awaited your article on Virbaln,
where my grandfather, may he rest in peace, was born in 1873, and
I was amazed by erudition and detail you provided when the article
became available on the Internet.
My grandfather, Gerson Guthman, was the son
of Aaron Gutelevich (or Gitelevicz), and immigrated to the US at
about 18 or 19. Aaron Gutelevich had a family by his first wife
which included sons Nechemiah Mass, who moved to Berlin, and (I
recently learned) Yitchak, known as Little Isaac the Pious, who
remained in Virbaln. My grandfather was born of Mr. Gutelevich's
second marriage. Based on my family tree, a young relative of mine
recently found and interviewed Mrs. Mascha Benya Matz, the singer
or Yiddish songs that you mention in your article!
Warmest regards,
Robert Lavine
