Dolina's history extends back to the tenth century. Four hundred years later the city became known for its salt mines. Dolina was ruled by Poland from the mid-14h to the late 18th century.
After World War II the city was incorporated into the U.S.S.R., becoming part of Ukraine; it continues in that status. Oil deposits were discovered in the region in the 1950s.
Dolina was home to a vibrant Jewish community until the German occupation.
