Jewish Houses in Janovice

House No. I - former Jilek's house

It was abandoned in 1713. In 1726 it was occupied by Moses Abraham and his sons Abraham, Chadim, Volf, Aron and Schindl. In 1790 Samuel Abraham lived there with his wife Rachel. After his death Rachel stayed in the house - known as Rachel Janovska (Janovska was a newly adopted surname).

According to old tradition, Pollak and Steiner were originally full brothers. Simon Pollak from Janovice 155 and I was a trader and a son of Moses Pollak, a trader in feathers. He was born on July 9, 1821. On May 30, 1853 he applied for permission to purchase a piece of land to build house number 155. The request for permission to build was sent to the district authorities on June 1, and was approved on June 18. On October 20, 1853 he asked for a wedding allowance. His bride was Eleonora, a 20 year-old daughter of Elias Klauber from Blizejov and Praporiste. On December 17, 1879 he was granted permission to run a wine inn. On September 21, 1881 he asked for an exemption from paying school fees for his son Joseph, a student in Pilsen. (This Joseph is later recorded as a student of medicine and a voluntary soldier). In November 1881, he was allowed to run a brandy bar. In 1881 Simon Pollak together with Bernard Klein and Antonin Vitak made a complaint against three shopkeepers: Rosalie Luft, Marie Kobler and Frantishka Ulrich. On June 12, 1884 his barns burned down. After he lost his first wife, Lia (Eleonora) on 5.11.1856, he married again on 17.8.1858. His second wife was Judita, daughter of Isak Steiner, 18 years old.

A Bloch family also lived in house Nr. I . On July 17, 1849 Barbora Bloch, wife of Gabriel Bloch from Janovice, 32 years old, died there of peritoneum inflammation. On April 8, 1850 Gabriel Bloch, son of Joachym from Dub, married Marie Janovska daughter of Volf from Janovice. On February 26, 1855 Anna Bloch, the widow of Joachym Bloch, a trader from Dub, Volyne district, 64 years old died. On April 8, 1857 Simon Arnstein from Cestic (?), 80 years old, died there of nerves paralysis. In the period 1807 - 1810 Samuel Loewy, a teacher, lived there with his wife, Bedora. In 1808 their daughter Rosalia was born.

In the Janovice birth register the following records about Janovsky (Janowitz) family members are recorded:
In 1807 Rachel, daughter of Volf Janovsky and Ludmila, was born. In 1808 a birth record is noted for Eleonora (her mother Elisabeta), in 1809 Jakob, in 1812, Frantishka, in 1817, Samuel and in 1822, Julia. On January 19, 1842 Volf Janovsky, 74 years old, died of weakness. In 1810 Cecilie, daughter of Abraham Janovsky and Rosalie, was born there. This Cecilie married Abraham, son of Markus Hutter and Katerina Sicher from Tyn, in 1838. In 1812 Abraham Janovsky married Anna Schnurmacher from Svihov. Abraham Janovsky died on 4.6.1835 at the age of 71 from intestinal inflammation. His first wedding was recorded on November 30, 1808, when he married Rosalie Janovska (or Janovicka) from Spalene Porici. In 1857 A. Schuman married Frantishka, a 26 year-old daughter of Wolf Janovsky, a trader, and Elisabeta. The wedding took place at Welbhausen, Bavaria.

In the Janovice Cadastral Register (Grundbuch) there is a record from 5.1.1836 : L. Janovsky, son of Abraham Janovsky, inherited one half of his father’s house. In the same book (fol. 390) there is a testament dated on 16.6.1842, left by Volf Janovsky, where Volf 's children and heirs are listed : Marie Klauberova, Moric Adolf and Leopold Janovsky, Karolina Klauberova, Frantishka Zihmanova, Samuel Janovsky, Jakub Janovsky, Barbora and Julie.

Karel Bloch also lived in house number I (there is a record from 1851: Karel Bloch from Janovice I opened his shop during the time of divine service. He was punished with a fine of one gold piece.) Jan Pelikan, a teacher in Janovice, also lived in house no. I. He was a son of Jan Pelikan, a glazier, from Prestice [307?] and Marie Hruba from Dnesice. Jan Pelikan's wife was Katerina, daughter of Ondrej Ris, a baker in Svihov and Alzbeta Stichewichova from Svihov. In 1855 Vojtech Steindler, a baker from Janovice I, son of Frantishek, a tanner in Klatovy and Rosalie Blohenova ? from Klatovy is recorded. Vojtech Steindler's wife was Rosalie, a daughter of Frantishek from Klatovy.

House No. II in Janovice

In 1782 Rubin Nathan's family lived there with sons Jonas, Salomon, Chadim and Abraham. In 1790 Gittl Rubin (her newly accepted name was Gittl Kann), 50 years old, a widow, also lived there with her daughter, Rebeka, Moyses Nathan (newly Moyses Kann), 50 years old, a house-to-house salesman, and his wife Terezie, 48 years old, and Jakob David (Jakob Eisner), 55 years old, his wife Sara, and son Josef. Nathan Rubin inherited house no. II on 20.11.1805.

During the years 1808-1827 Isak Klein's family lived there: his wife Babeta (Barbora), daughters Rosalie, born in 1816, Mimy, born in 1822, and his son Jonas born in 1824. Bernard, son of Isak Klein (Isak's father was David from Klenova), married Barbora, daughter of Loebl from Hradek, in 1830. David, son of Isak Klein, was born in 1836. On December 8, 1849 Barbora, wife of Isak Klein, died of typhus. Josef Klein, a trader in Janovice, son of Isak and Barbora née Neuman, born in 1824, married Katerina Kann, born in 1833, daughter of Juda from Susice, a house-to-house salesman, and Anna, daughter of Loebl Bloch from Dlouha Ves. On May 21, 1854 the general attorney in Klatovy decided to have the police take away the bad scales of Josef Klein, a shopkeeper (OA 1854).

House No. III in Janovice

Volf David from Mochtin, son of Abraham, lived there with his son JakubVolf. He acquired it through purchase from Loebl Markus. On April 27, 1787, a marriage allowance for Abraham, the 22 year-old son of Volf David, and Terindl, daughter of Volf Abraham was recorded.

The family of Abraham Goldschmidt also lived in the house, with sons Aron, David, Bernard and Josef and daughters, Elizabeta, born 1807 and Anna, born 1814. Loebl Goldschmidt and his wife, Eva can also be found in the records. In 1823 their daughter Frantishka was born and Volf was born in 1824. In 1823 Jonas was born as an illegitimate son of Rebeka Goldschmidt. Abraham Goldschmidt died on 14.2.1841 at the age of 81. On 24.3.1844 Terezie Goldschmidt, the widow of Jakub, from Janovice died here.

House No. IV in Janovice

This house was owned by Isak Steiner in 1847 On October 26, 1782 Hitzigin, the widow of Salomon Pollak, was recorded with her sons, Izak, Jachym, and Salomon Jachym. Volf Jachym was recorded as having used an old cottage for stables without the permission of the authorities. In 1810 Rosalie Luft, daughter of Markus Luft and Ester, was born there. In 1819 Salomon, son of Moyses Pollak and Rosalie Stein (correctly Ohrenstein) from Vodnany, was born there. In house no. IV Moyses had 5 children: Rosalie, born 18.7.1827, Salomon, born 27.2.1819, Simon born 19.7.1821, Isak, born 1833 (died in 1840) and Lazar, born 1830 (died in 1871). Simon (born 1821) married Judita, daughter of Isak Steiner from Janovice. At age 37 he married his second wife, Eleonora Klauber. Salamon was a feather salesman. His wife was Rosalie, daughter of Jachym Steiner, a salesman in Janovice. Their marriage was recorded on 7.11.1849 - Salamon was 30 and Rosalie was 25. Their children were: Heinrich Jachym born 1851, Katerina, born 28.9.1855, Julie born 9.6.1859 (died 1861) and Sara born 6.5.1862.

Moses's son Lazar, a soldier, married Regina (born 3.12.1837) daughter of Jachym Steiner from Janovice. On March 23, 1840 Isak Pollak, son of Moises and Rosalie born Ohrenstein, died at the age of 7.

Isak Pollak (1748 -1832) married Rosel - or Rosalie Schwarzkopf from Susice.

In 1822 Joachim Steiner and Katerina née Spira’s son, Volf, was born there and in 1824 their daughter Terezie was born. Their daughter Dorota died there on 14.10.1824. Their son, Markus, 12 years old, died on 2.7.1832. Theirson Volf, 10 years old, died on 25.8.1832. On 29.4.1833 Jachym 's daughter, Katerina, died. In 1833 Jachym's son Samuel married Katerina, daughter of Isak Spira from Horazdovice. Rosalie Pollak, 74 years old, died on 24.8.1832 from "weakness and high age." Samuel son of Moyses Pollak, a feather salesman, married Rosalie Arnstein, daughter of Leopold from Vodnany and Barbora née Sicher from Tynec.

On 29.6.1834 Emanuel, a 1 year-old child of Jachym Steiner, died from weakness. Volf, son of Isak Steiner (son of Volf and Judita Kastlova from Kynzvart ), was born the same year. In 1837 Regina, a daughter of Joachim Steiner and Lidmila, was born. The same year Terezie Steiner, an illegitimate daughter of Rebeka, daughter of Abraham, a familiant from Podhuri, Klatovy region, and Anna née Freyman was born. In 1839 Dorota, daughter of Joachim Steiner, a salesman in Janovice (son of Volf from Janovice and Judita) and Lidmila née Blochova (daughter of David Bloch, a salesman in Horazdovice and Eva née Hilsen from Nyrsko), was born there.

House No. V in Janovice (formerly no. 37)

By August 26, 1782 Jakub Nathan, son of Nosek Nathan, lived there with his son, Isak. The house, formerly number 37, which used to be populated by Christians, was purchased from Emanuel Beml. The house was situated near the Brethren church cemetery, and therefore it seems more probable that it and not house nr. 25 was originally the old Brethren school.

House No. VI in Janovice, built around 1743, burned down in 1847

The date of origin is known from a recorded lawsuit (1782) between the town authorities and Salomon Nathan. The reason for the lawsuit was that the house was built by Salomon Nathan without permission and occupied by him since 1743. In the list of Janovice inhabitants from 1790, Jakob Nathan from no. VI is also included. On December 15, 1809 a contract was signed for the purchase of house no. VI in Janovice. - Loebl Bloch bought it from Klara Kahn and paid 936 gold coins for it. (Recorded in the Cadastral Register).

Anna Bloch died there at the age of 11 on 1.1.1828 of pneumonia. On May 15, 1854 Simon Bloch was given confirmation that in 1847 he lost all his possessions in a fire at house no. VI. On August 3, 1859 Loebl Bloch, a salesman in Janovice VI, a widower, 74 years-old, died of "weakness and high age".

House No. VII in Janovice (called Severyn's)

On October 9, 1772, David Volf (later David Bloch), a Jew from Janovice, bought house no. VII from Mayer Abraham, a Jew from Nyrsko for 450 gold coins. The purchaser promised to take care of his mother, Serl, until her death. (from Cadastral Registry, Janovice). David Volf-Bloch and his wife Katerina had the following children : Moyses, born 1808, Aron, born 1809, Salomon, born 1809, Samuel, born 1811 (here the mother is noted as Rebeca ), and Sara, born 1813 (mother Rebeca). In 1787 David Volf asked authorities to exempt him from taxes. He was seriously ill and in debt as well as the father of 4 children. David Bloch died at the age of 73 on 8.3.1846(?) of convulsions.

From 1826 to 1864 Leopold Weis, a circumciser, lived there. In 1837 Benedikt Adam Weisel, a salesman in Janovice (son of David from Bezdekobv and Barbora from Oujezd) married Rosi Blochova, daughter of Volf Bloch, a salesman and tenant of a house in Janovicem and Jetti born Gans). In 1857 Jan Treml, a day labourer in Janovice VII, son of Karel from Dubova married Barbora Tutschova, an illegitimate daughter of Katerina, daughter of Jiri Tutsch, a farmer from Petrovice. In 1874 Josef Vaclavovic, a miller's assistant, son of Josef from Lhota, married Katerina daughter of Josef Polc, a locksmith from Janovice VII, and Eva.

House No. VIII in Janovice

On November 17, 1796 Anna Kahnova sold this house to Volf Janovicky, a Jew from Nyrsko. Later a Mayer family lived in VIII, but they later moved away. In 1808 Charlotta, daughter of David Mayer and Frantishka, was born, in 1810, Lazar and in 1812 Rosalie. According to Cadastral Registry, the house was then bought from Ludvik Mayer by Adam Weisel, who paid 1000 gold coins for it. Adam Weisel and Rosalie née Bloch had a daughter Marie. There is a marriage recorded on 13.11.1861: Juda Steiner, son of Jachym and Katerina, 27 years old, married Marie Weisl, 19 years old daughter of Adam Weisel and Rosalie née Bloch). After Marie died Juda Steiner married Marie's sister Terezie, born in 1842. On December 11, 1858 Elizabeta Steinerova daughter of Juda, a salesman in Janovice, died at age 3 months.

In 1824 was born there Loebl son of Isak Steindler and Anna.

The Pollaks lived in this house. Benedikt vulgo Isak Pollak, son of Salomon and Barbora, was born here. Salomon 's daughter Sara married Loebl Weil from Vostracin in 1837.

House No. XXV in Janovice

In 1808 Terezie Pollakova, the mother of Isak Pollak, 88 years old, died there of weakness. In the same year, Markus, son of Salamon and Barbora was born here. Isak was born in 1810, Karel in 1814 and Judita in 1816. On December 3, 1842 Salomon Pollak, retired salesman in Janovice, 73 years old, died of weakness and high age. In 1850 Barbora née Kibl from Strazov, the widow of Salomon Pollak, 78 years old, died of weakness. In 1839 Judita Pollakova, daughter of Salomon and Barbora née Kibl , 25 years old, married Isak Kibl, a house-to-house salesman in Strazov 5, son of Moisesand Sara born Tischl from Merklin. Antonin Pollak, a rabbi in Janovice , son of Jakub from Neutra in Hungary, married Pavlina Porges daughter of Jakub Porges, owner of a factory in Prague 1.
