The Jewish Cemetery
The Jewish Cemetery is situated on what was earlier called the ul. Koszarna. Today this street is called ul. Kosciuszki.
The Jewish Cemetery is just next to the Christian cemetery. According to what I have been told, there may be close to thousand gravestones in the Jewish cemetery. It may be that two third of these stones are still legible. Some gravestones from the 18th century have been studied by Pawel Sygowski and Andrezej Trzcinski from Lublin. Their article was published in Rocznik Lubaczowski Tom VII published in 1999. See the bibliography for more details.
One day I hope to visit the Lubaczow cemetery, so I am preparing myself by learning as much as possible about the gravestones already photographed. This because, even though I read and speak Hebrew, it is not easy to understand what is written in Hebrew on the gravestones.
Out of this situation I have written a text called A Beginner's Tutorial for Reading the Gravestones in Lubaczow. This may also be helpful for others visiting Jewish cemeteries in Galicia if they know how to read Hebrew.
You may also like to check the description and translation of the gravestones photographed by Howard Bodenstein in 1999. To see the beautiful photos, please proceed to the Photo Gallery.
Looking at the old gravestones with the flowers around them, there is something very quiet and serene about the place.
Therefore it is very important to remember that during the last days of the Jews in Lubaczow in January 1943, it is estimated that 1200 Jews were brutally murdered in the Jewish Cemetery. Maurie Hoffman who was witness to part of the massmurder, testifies about this in his book " Keep Yelling" (Chapter 11, pages 103 - 106). He also tells that the victims were buried in a mass grave in the cemetery. When Maurie Hoffman visited Lubaczow some years ago, he visited the site of this mass grave.
