Botosani, Romania

other names: Botoschan (Ger), Botoszany (Pol), Botoshani (Rus,Ukr),  Botuschani.  Location 47°45' / 26°40'

Welcome to the Botosani Website

Botosani is the name for the county (Judet) and the capital city of the county. Botosani County lies in the northeast corner of modern Romania and is bordered by

  1. Two countries: the Ukraine in the North and the Moldova Republic in the East
  2. Two Romania Counties:  Suceava in the West and Iasi in the South.

Modern Romania is divided into nine Regions and 41 counties. Botosani County and Suceava County are considered part of modern Bucovina region. This differs a bit from historic Bukovina which was primarily Suceava County plus modern Chernivetska oblast of the Ukraine. Modern Moldavia region consists of six counties to the south and should not be confused with the republic of Moldova (once Bessarabia and additional smaller areas).

Botosani city was the Jewish center of the area (with a  smaller secondary center at Dorohoi) from the 16th/17th centuries. Over the next few hundred years many people  moved to the growing towns and villages. However,  towards  the end of the 19th century government regulations and emigration from Romania started to reverse the process.  Between 1881 and 1910 over one fourth of the Romanian Jewish population emigrated to the U.S.A. [David Vital, p 507].

This website will include all cities and towns in Botosani County. The county area is 4,986 sq km or 1,925 sq mi - about the size of the US State of Delaware. In 2002 Botosani city had an estimated population of 129,300 (19th largest in Romania) and the county had a population of 452,834. The second largest city is Dorohoi with a population of about 32,000. There are no other towns with more than 20,000 inhabitants.

This site is dedicated to the Jewish communities of Botosani. Its main goals are to:

  1. commemorate our ancesters from Botosani
  2. share data and information
  3. facilitate further research, discussion, and other projects

All Botosaners and descendants are invited to send in suggestions, corrections, and material for this site. See the Contact Button at the top of each page.

January 2008 - New Projects

Two new potential projects regarding Botosani  are under discussion:

  1. Maintenance/Restoring the Botosani Jewish Cemetery
  2. Indexing Records from the Botosani Archives

The initiatives may be related to the new accessibility at the Romanian Archives and Romania's rapid growth as a tourist destination. Many of our reseachers have reported recent visits to their ancestral shtetls.

Please see the Projects page and stay tuned. We will also start an email message list. Suggestions and new input are encouraged.
