Botosani is the name of a city and judet (county) located in the northeast corner of Romania.  There was a large Jewish population beginning in the 16th/17th centuries. Over the next few hundred years many Jews moved to about a dozen smaller but growing Botosani county cities and towns (see Cities) and were often a significant part of the population. At the end of the 19th century government regulations started to reverse the process and Jews moved back to Botosani or migrated out of Romania.   An excellent detailed history appears at Pinkas Hakehillot Botosani

Botosani county is one of 41 counties in Romania and had a population of 452,834 in 2002 and an area is 4,986 sq km (1,925 sq mi) - about the size of the US State of Delaware.  Botosani city had an estimated population of 129,300 (19th largest in Romania). The second largest city is Dorohoi with a population of about 32,000.

This site is dedicated to the Jewish communities of Botosani. Its main goals are to:

  1. commemorate our ancesters from Botosani
  2. share data and information
  3. facilitate further research, discussion, and other projects
